Our most popular choice, and the one we recommend if you're unsure. Belgian non-woven is breathable, dimensionally stable, and forgiving to work with. It's a paste-the-wall material, which means the adhesive goes onto the wall rather than the paper, making installation faster, cleaner, and far kinder to first-timers.

It's also the easiest to remove when you eventually fancy a change — it peels away dry in whole strips, without steaming or scraping. For living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways, it's hard to beat.

Where there's moisture, steam, or the likelihood of the odd splash and scuff, vinyl is the sensible pick. Its surface tolerates a gentle wipe-down, which makes it well suited to kitchens, bathrooms, and busy family spaces where walls take a bit of punishment.

It's tougher than paper and shrugs off humidity that would trouble more delicate finishes, so it holds its look for longer in the rooms that ask the most of it.

Textured paper has a subtle surface relief that catches the light and gives the design real depth and craft. Run your hand across it and you feel the difference; stand back and the pattern reads richer and more considered than it ever could on a flat sheet.

It rewards a calm, dry room — a formal living room, a dining room, or a feature wall behind a bed — where it can be admired rather than wiped. Treat it as the special finish it is and it will look exquisite for years.

Canvas is our weightiest material and the closest thing to hanging a painting across a whole wall. The woven surface gives artwork a gallery quality that flatter materials cannot reach, and its substance means it sits solidly against the wall and is forgiving of minor imperfections beneath.

It suits the wall you want to be the room's centrepiece — a large mural, a double-height stairwell, a reception space. Like textured paper it prefers a dry room and gentle care, and being the heaviest option it is the one most worth having installed professionally.

For most living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways, Belgian non-woven offers the best balance of ease, durability, and value. For kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, and high-traffic family walls, choose polymeric vinyl for its wipe-clean resilience.

Reserve textured paper for the rooms you want to feel special — the statement wall, the dining room, the study — where its tactile finish can do its quiet work undisturbed. Choose canvas when the wall is the centrepiece and you want the weight and surface of a gallery piece.

Whichever you choose, a soft, barely-damp cloth handles everyday dust and marks; skip harsh chemicals, solvents, and abrasive scrubbing. Vinyl is the most tolerant of moisture, while textured paper and canvas both prefer to stay dry. None of our materials is waterproof, and none should be scrubbed.

Keep any material out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve colour, and let a freshly hung wall cure for a day or two before you clean it. Do that, and your wallpaper will look as good in a decade as it did on day one.
